Backup and Disaster Recovery Fundamentals

What we'll cover

  • Backup fundamentals: Full, incremental, and differential backups. When to use each type and how they affect storage costs and recovery time.
  • Storage options: Local NAS, cloud providers (AWS S3, Azure Blob, Backblaze), tape archives. Cost versus accessibility tradeoffs.
  • Recovery metrics: Calculating realistic RPO and RTO for different business functions. Why "zero data loss" often costs more than it's worth.
  • Tools and automation: Hands-on with Veeam, rsync, Duplicati, and cloud-native backup services. Scheduling, encryption, verification.

Recovery procedures

Building and testing disaster recovery plans. File-level restore, bare-metal recovery, database point-in-time recovery. How to practice failures without breaking production.

You'll leave with backup scripts, a tested recovery runbook, and documentation you can hand to your team

Full Program Details

Data loss happens. Hard drives fail, ransomware encrypts files, someone accidentally deletes the production database. This program covers what you need to know about protecting data and getting systems back online.

We'll work through backup strategies that actually make sense for different scenarios—local backups, cloud storage, hybrid approaches. You'll see how RPO and RTO affect your decisions about what to back up and how often.

The recovery side gets messy fast. We'll practice restoring from backups, building runbooks for common failure scenarios, and testing whether your disaster recovery plan works before you need it in production. You'll configure backup tools, set up monitoring, and document recovery procedures that someone else can follow at 3 AM.
